certified personal trainer (CPT)

The American Council on Exercise’s (ACE) personal training certification is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, as are all of the certifications ACE offers. The ACE CPT course covers subjects like human anatomy, exercise physiology, fundamentals of kinesiology, nutrition, behavioral change, health psychology, functional movement, functional and physiological assessments, resistance training, cardiorespiratory training, mind-body exercise and more. In order to become an ACE CPT you have to successfully complete the course, hold an active CPR/AED certification and pass the CPT exam. To continue holding your CPT you must complete 20 hours of continuing education credits every two years as well as staying up to date on your CPR/AED certification.

corrective exercise specialist (CES)

Once I became a CPT I started looking for other ways to expand my knowledge-base. I choose to become a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). This certification required me to complete online coursework covering topics like human movement science and impairments, postural movement, and strength assessments, and specific techniques of NASM’s Corrective Exercise Continuum which allow me to direct you in establishing proper movement patterns, muscle function and avoid injury or reduce pain.

fitness nutrition specialist (FNS)

I continued on in my education to become a Fitness Nutrition Specialist through ACE. The coursework for this certification covered detailed topics like macronutrients, micronutrients, dietary guidelines and general nutrition recommendations, nutrition strategies for optimal athletic performance, supplements, weight management and nutrition for those with special needs.

Although I passed this course, I am not qualified to offer medical nutrition therapy, recommend supplements, or provide specific meal plans. If you are looking for these services please check your local area for a registered dietitian who is licensed and qualified to help you.

Group fitness instructor (GFI)

I became an ACE GFI shortly after I acquired my CPT. I decided to widen my scope to include individuals who choose to participate in group fitness rather than one-on-one training sessions. This certification allows me to reach a broader spectrum of individuals and teaches me how to balance my attention and teach to a wide variety of people with different education, economical and cultural backgrounds.
